Hell Hath Frozen Over.
September 4th 2003, 00:39 CEST by Charles

LucasArts has given UT2003 Troopers a green light.

Excerpt:

The agreement made with LucasArts (after a long period of VERY friendly negotiations) also allows the Troopers Development Team to implement Star Wars assets and content directly from the movies and games. This means that, with the exception of the Star Wars music (which LucasArts doesn't own the rights to, and so therefore could not give us the rights to use), we can use anything we want.

Do you play the other realms?  It sounds from your post, and this could be just my opinion of it, you have some realm envy happening.  I'm not saying you're wrong, but I think your class comparisions are a bit off, though I've only played PvE so my experience is limited.  I do agree with the architecture all lookings the same in Hibernia.  Though, that holds true for everything in all the realms.  The cities all use the same general texture set, as do the outposts, etc.

As for the people that said EQ had cooler things to see for the noob, I say bleh.  You never saw any of the cooler things in EQ until were at least 25th-30th level.  In DAOC I've seen some really great graphics, but more in terms of things looking right...  the landscape looks a hell of a lot better in DAOC than it does in EQ imho.

I just started playing DAOC again with some friends...  Having a good time with it, playing Albion as none of us wanted to play in Hibernia (we don't like the layout, takes FOREVER to get anywhere) and some of had already had big characters in Midgard.  The only thing that strikes me about playing DAOC again is that the servers that don't have high populations are COMPLETELY empty for lower level characters...  we decided to start again on Lancelot because of that.  Oh, and the graphics on a ti4600 are VERY nice.  The water, depending upon the place, has currents and ripples in it, looks almost real.  The trees are great, the sky and love.  The grass still ain't much, but everything is amazing for how old that game is.

"those people" was me, and you are wrong.  Sure, DAoC does up a nice tree or hill, but I never once turned a corner, saw a site I had not seen, and gone, 'whoa, cool'.  That happened all the time in EQ the first time through, and I don't know where you get thinking they have to be 25th level to do it either.  I'm talking when the game was new, not 4 years later on a dated engine.

The architecture of Dark age is just average, nothing special, which is sad, because it's quite a nice graphic engine that gets used to make pretty water and pretty spell effects and that's about it.

Played Albion extensively through the beta, have ongoing Midgard characters (2 level 50 Hibs, level 40 shaman, level 25 skald).

LP, you havent seen the shrouded Isles expansion, of the three realms Hibernia got perhaps the best expansion graphically (the old world is still shit), but our two `new` classes, Mid got the Savage AND the Bondancer (both of which have design issues), Albions Reaver is useful and their necromancer is about the best power leveling char in the game. Hibs Animist has its uses in keep defence and can solo but adds little to nothing to the realm, the valewalker is a light tank with crappy damage, low hp and cloth armour.

In contrast it takes forever to get anywhere in Mid, Albion is pretty well laid out and has lots of horse routes, Hibernia is pretty much one looooooong strip of land bordered by mountains.  Take a look at the keeps for each realm (finally being changed), Alb and Mid had solid Lord towers with staircases winding up through them causing choke points, Hibs? Hibs have a hollow tower with the stairs round the outside and a clear line of sight all the way to the top, there is no step by step retreat/fight, it makes Hib keeps easier to take than the others.

Realm population hurts a lot of servers, but the /level command (giving you an instant level 20 or level 30 if you have an existing 50 on -any- of the servers, Us or Euro doesnt quite work across that way), has meant a lot of people trying new realms and classes, meaning there ARE low population groups around. Level 1-5 are doable in 20 minutes, 5-20 are kill tasks and you can do those in a day or two if you had to.

No, you didn't! Ds obviously knows what you have and haven't seen. After all, he's a professional.

Nah, if LP says he did that he did that.  I assumed incorrectly that he hadnt seen SI, because it does have a couple of very `pretty` locations.

Sorry LP.

I'll forgive you....this time.

No, SI did pretty things up, but again, I'm talking about the general strutures, none of which ever did much for me.  And Yeah, some of the SI dungeons are very pretty, and are designed a bit better overall, so they are learning.
