Ok, can someone help me?

Everytime I click a link in my browser, a pop up happens...  but it's not the websites, it's something local on my machine.  I'd like rid of it all ready, but I'm lost on how to do so after spending some time at it.  It has to be some addin or program related to IE because it doesn't happen with Netscape.

Suggestions?

Matt:

Sounds like you've got a hijack program. I would download LavaSoft's AdAware program and Spybot and run them to clean things up.

I had a problem just like that, Matt, but SpyBot and AdAware couldn't find it.

I did a bit of research and discovered I had a hijack program that calls itself winlogon.exe and sits in the windows folder, rather than in the windows\system or windows\system32 folder like the legitimate winlogon.exe does. It was causing all kinds of weird shit: no right clicks, porn forwarding, porn bookmarks, and, oddly, music programs complained I had no sound card (even though windows sounds played fine through my speakers). Anyway, I ran HijackThis, saved the log and posted it on
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ where I got a reply within 5 minutes telling me how and what to get rid of. I ran CoolWebShredder, and anything that wasn't fixed by that I removed using HijackThis.

HijackThis is available:
http://www.mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/

CoolWebShredder is available:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe

I recommend posting the HijackThis log in the forum before doing anything
though :P

And there's some information on how it's possible to get infected, and how
to protect yourself:

Oh and, related to poor security, I saw this thing on Coolio's the other day -

IE allows people to spoof sites; making it appear you are going to a legit site (correct URL etc.) but when you are in fact at another site. This could mean, in the extremist of extreme examples, a spoofer might set up an identical site to Barclays, trick you into going there via a hyperlink, and have you send them your security details.

An explanation (and test to see if you're vulnerable):
http://netsquirrel.com/spoof/

The solution:

Marsh:

that trick with the URL spoofing was actually abused a couple of weeks ago by scammers pretending to be a Dutch bank. A lot of people fell for it and entered important account information on a site they thought was the bank's site. Fortunately this has led to even more pressure on Microsoft to update their damn browser more often than once every 4 years.

Thanks everyone (especially Marsh).  That Hijack program is GREAT.  I did post a log to the forum you suggested, but then I got impatient and just went cutting things myself.  Cut the pop up problem gone.  And a side note, Adaware couldn't get rid of this one, nor Mcafee's new spyware dealie.

Thanks again.

Now for a more interesting problem regarding VPNs...

When I go to create a connection to the company VPN, I start the connection wizard, choose "Connect to the network at my workplace" and click Next.  The next window has BOTH Dial up and VPN connection disabled (they are greyed out).  I looked on support.microsoft.com, no mention of it and now I'm scouring the web and soon newsgroups...  Just hoping someone might have heard of this before and knows the solution.

Thanks either way.

You have the dreaded ButtFucker.b Virus,  download Homoaway.exe and install it, have yourself a ball.
