Maybe someone just decided they'd had enough of us fagging up the other threads, so they gave us a nice faggy thread to fag in.

If I had to choose between the '80s classics "Beat Street" or "Breakin'" for a prestigious award, I'd probably have to go with the latter, since its sequel introduced the mind-shattering concept of marrying *electricity* with the boogaloo.

I'm going to hijack this thread to Cuba.

Tech question for you guys...

So I need to install the latest Call of Duty patch. I'm having problems patching the game, however, and I suspect it's because I had problems actually installing the game in the first place. Before the game's release I had installed an alpha of the game and as we kept getting more builds I would remove them and install a new alpha. As is the case with most alphas and betas, some of these builds weren't actual installs so much as directories copies and some were actual installs.

So to be sure I had a clean copy once the game was out, I went to install the retail version. I wanted to clean out the older version first, but Windows wouldn't let me uninstall it, it gave me problems. The game itself only gave me an uninstall option, not an install or reinstall option. So after fussing with it I just figured that I'd had what was very close to the gold version anyway and only some minor things were different, I'd just copy the directories over to make sure I had the retail pak files, etc. Seemed to work -- been playing the game just fine.

But now that I can't patch it, which I suspect is due to my hack job described above, I want to completely uninstall the game cleanly and reinstall the retail game so I can patch it. But I can't seem to uninstall via Windows or the game's opening options.

So I want to delete the directories and then do whatever I need to do to clean it completely off my system. I'm sure this involves some kind of reg key cleaning, but I rarely fool with editing the registry, so I wanted to ask if you guys knew what I needed to do to completely clean the game off the system.

Thanks...

I wouldn't think you'd need to clean out any registry entries.  Just wipe out the directory, install the retail, then patch.  If it doesn't work, then it's pretty simple to just use Find in Regedit for "cod" or "call of duty" or whatever common identifier they used, and kill them.  I'd try the simplest way first, though.  Always best.

Well, delete the directories, then run regedit, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software and HKEY_USERS\RandomString\Software and then look for keys with activision or the developer or game's name on them, then delete those after you make sure they relate to call of duty (which should be obvious).

Why bother?  If someone is going to steal a $10 puzzle game, you're not going to change their minds about piracy.  Price is obviously not the reason they're stealing it ... they're stealing it because they want to.

People who want to buy it and support the developers, will.  People who want to steal it, will.  *shrug*

It isn't like it's any great badge of pride to "crack" Bubble Bomb anyway.  On a piracy difficulty scale, it probably ranks about a 1.

Yeh, but it's like the Oscars. They start with the unimportant people that they HAVE to thank, and then they get to the real people as time's running out.

I've actually done all of that. The directory has been deleted, and the CoD key that I could find in the registry has been deleted. There was no CoD key in the Uninstall area of the registry.

The problem I'm getting is that when I go to install the retail version, I am ONLY given the option to Uninstall on the splash screen. I don't even have the option to install or reinstall, because it thinks the game is installed even after deleting the directories and deleting the one CoD key I saw in the registry under Software.

Greg has been helping me with this in IRC. He thinks that the game is looking for a file that I'm missing. I just don't know what file.

So talking to Greg, he suggested that if someone who has CoD installed can look in the Uninstall area of their registry and see what file the game looks for when you want to unstall it, I can find that file on my system and remove it to finally reinstall the game (since my registry has no Uninstall key for CoD). Anyone able to help me out on that?

It sounds like there's something still in the registry, if the game thinks it's still installed.

There are uninstall information files and executables too, that usually get stored in the game's directory.  I don't have CoD on my machine up here at work, and I imagine you'll have the problem solved by the time I get home, but if not I'll check and see what they are.

You should be able to bypass the splash screen installer dealie and just run the actual setup executable from the CD.  Those autorun things are always a pain, but happily one that I haven't had to bother with for years thanks to TweakUI's paranoia settings.
